The CSAT Reality Check
Here's the good news: CSAT is only a qualifying paper. You need just 33% (66 marks out of 200) to qualify.
Here's the better news: Comprehension alone can give you 80-100 marks if done well. That means even with zero maths, you can clear CSAT comfortably.
But here's why you shouldn't be complacent: every year, ~5% of aspirants who clear the GS Paper I cutoff fail CSAT. Don't let Paper II become your Achilles' heel.
Understanding the CSAT Pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comprehension | 7-9 passages (20-25 Qs) | 40-50 | Easy-Medium |
| Logical Reasoning | 8-10 Qs | 16-20 | Medium |
| Basic Numeracy | 8-10 Qs | 16-20 | Medium-Hard |
| Data Interpretation | 5-7 Qs | 10-14 | Medium |
| Decision Making | 3-5 Qs | 6-10 | Easy-Medium |
| **Total** | **80** | **160** (of 200) |
The Non-Maths Strategy: Focus on Your Strengths
Priority 1: Comprehension (Target: 40-50 marks)
This is where arts/humanities students actually have an advantage. You read better than most.
How to practice:
- Read one passage daily from CurrentPrep's CSAT practice section
- Practice identifying the main argument of the passage
- Watch for inference questions — the answer is implied, not stated
- Time yourself: 3 minutes per passage, 1 minute per question
Priority 2: Logical Reasoning (Target: 12-16 marks)
Topics that don't need maths:
- Blood relations
- Direction-based problems
- Coding-decoding
- Syllogisms (All A are B, Some B are C type)
- Seating arrangements
These are pattern-based — once you learn the technique, they become easy. Practice 5 questions daily.
Priority 3: Decision Making (Target: 6-10 marks)
These are purely judgment-based questions. No maths needed. Read government report scenarios and choose the most ethical/practical course of action.
Priority 4: Basic Numeracy (Target: 8-12 marks)
You DON'T need to learn all of maths. Focus on only these high-yield topics:
Must-learn (5-6 questions come from these):
- Percentages (learn 3 shortcuts)
- Ratio & Proportion (learn the cross-multiplication method)
- Averages (sum/count — that's it)
- Profit & Loss (only basic questions)
Can skip if short on time:
- Permutations & Combinations
- Probability
- Quadratic equations
- Complex geometry
Priority 5: Data Interpretation (Target: 6-10 marks)
Learn to read:
- Bar charts (just compare heights)
- Pie charts (percentages = marks)
- Tables (find data, do simple arithmetic)
Practice 2 DI sets per week. Our CSAT mock tests at /mock-tests have dedicated DI sections.
60-Day CSAT Preparation Plan
| Week | Focus | Daily Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1-2 | Comprehension passages | 3 passages/day from CSAT mocks |
| Week 3-4 | Logical Reasoning (blood relations, coding, seating) | 10 questions/day |
| Week 5-6 | Basic Numeracy (percentages, ratios, averages) | Learn formulas + 10 questions/day |
| Week 7-8 | Data Interpretation + Decision Making | 2 DI sets + 5 DM questions/day |
| Week 9+ | Full-length CSAT mock tests | 1 full test every 3 days |
5 Must-Know Formulas (That's All You Need)
- Percentage Change = (New - Old) / Old × 100
- Average = Sum of all values / Number of values
- Profit % = (Selling Price - Cost Price) / Cost Price × 100
- Speed = Distance / Time
- Simple Interest = Principal × Rate × Time / 100
Seriously — these 5 formulas cover 80% of CSAT numeracy questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I score very high in GS but fail CSAT?
It happens more often than you'd think. If you score below 66/200 in CSAT, your GS score doesn't matter — you're out. Never take CSAT lightly.
Should I join CSAT coaching?
No. CSAT is straightforward enough for self-study. Use free resources + practice. Save your money for Mains preparation.
How much time should I give to CSAT daily?
1 hour daily for 2 months is enough. Don't let CSAT eat into your GS preparation time.
