Frequently Asked Questions — UPSC CSAT

Is CSAT a qualifying paper?
Yes. CSAT (Paper II) is qualifying with a minimum cut-off of 33% (66 marks out of 200). Your score is NOT added to the merit list. However, failing to score 33% means elimination regardless of your GS Paper I score.
Can I clear CSAT without maths background?
Absolutely. CSAT maths is Class 10 level. Focus on basic arithmetic, percentages, ratios, and data interpretation. Skip complex questions and secure marks in comprehension and reasoning which together make up 60-70% of the paper.
How much time should I give to CSAT preparation?
If you are comfortable with basic maths, 3-4 weeks is sufficient. If you struggle with maths, start 2 months before Prelims. Spend 1 hour daily on CSAT practice. The key is regular practice, not extensive study.
What is the CSAT paper pattern?
CSAT has 80 questions worth 200 marks (2.5 marks each). Topics: Comprehension (25-30 Qs), Logical Reasoning & Analytical Ability (25-30 Qs), Basic Mathematics & Data Interpretation (20-25 Qs). Negative marking: 1/3rd of marks deducted for wrong answers.
Which topics should I focus on for CSAT?
Priority order: 1) Comprehension passages (easiest marks if you read carefully), 2) Logical reasoning (sequences, arrangements, coding), 3) Data interpretation (tables, graphs), 4) Basic maths (simplification, percentage, average). Master comprehension first — it is 35-40% of the paper.
What score should I target in CSAT?
Target 120+ to be safe. The qualifying mark is 66/200 (33%), but aim for a comfortable margin. Most aspirants clear CSAT with 100-130 marks. Focus on accuracy over attempting all questions.
